MARGUERITE M

Marguerite M    A very dear friend of mine passed away at Bellingen Hospital on New Years eve a few years back. The staff were incredible. They treated him with compassion, great dignity and though he was not in paliative care, the aid rendered to him would have made Elizabeth Kubler Ross proud to know that such a quaint regional hospital could provide that level of care.

DEBBIE McF

Debbie McF     How about the gov use their brains if they have any, and think about what is best for the discrict and not what is best for them. This hospital also supports towns in wide area eg dorigo. How do they know whats best for the area when they don't live there would be a different story if they took on of the pollies hospitals away

PETER McG

Peter McG Saw the doco on this hospital on TV a while back (last year), it may have been 60 minutes, but you are right, you need this Hospital in Bellingen....

I work at the only hospital in Darwin NT, and see the same thing happening across Australia.......The bean counters, those not at the coalface, cut services to save money, and it gets them qudos, a promotion & they move on......
while we at the coalface pay a terrible price for this thoughtles stupidity afterwards, here we have had several coronial board of enquiry, and the people who answer these didn't make the cost cutting decisions at all, but they wear the fallout, scapegoated and blamed for the mistakes ..........

GILLIAN

Hmmm, could it be that any health professional would be for all services to stay at Bello!!! lol

MAX F

The Area Health Service and the Government couldn't care less. They have already made up their minds and it appears that nothing will change them. The closure has been in the pipe line for over 15 years.

CAROLINE J

Caroline J thanks to everyone who came to the photoshoot this morning especially the beautiful Dad and Mums and Grandparents and our Mayor Mark who came had a piccie in the park on a beautiful morning and the wonderful Solveig who took all the great pics. YVONNE R

Yvonne R It is imperative to save this Hospital, it services such a large area, the community needs this Hospital.........from Yvonne Roff

SANDY P

Sandy P       my god. the best hospital in the world. my brother henry paulger was the smallest baby ever born there. my son jason oxenbridge was born there . thank u dr. dunn. keep bello going. they and dr. dunn saved the life of my youngest, shannon oxenbridge. come on.!!!

PAT C

ROZ Y

Roz Y Thank you to the staff at Bellingen who took such good care of Clarey Richards who passed away this morning. Clarey was a great man, a lover of all things natural, he will be missed by his girl Evelyn

SAMMI C

Sammi C    Don't forget the photo shoot in the park today at 10am for mothers (pregnant bellies get extra points ;-) )! Still on, if it is raining at the time, we will meet inside the library.

JANETTE L

Janette L     What we need to do is band together as a community and support our hospital in any way we can to keep it operational, try attend meetings when possible that the BHAG hold and lend your time and expertise when possible so we dont burn out! We all have to be in for the long haul and share the responsibility,we can do it if we all contribute. So lets stand up and pull together and make it happen. Oh, and buy a bumper sticker or a ticket to the ball:-)

COLIN F

Colin F treated there a few times and operated on once. the best hospital I have had the pleasure of being sick in!

RILEY Y

Riley Y I was born at Bello hospital 1959 as also were (different years) my 6 brothers and 3 sisters-all delivered by Dr Hewitt.
My sister started her nursing career at Bello hospital
4 years ago my elderly father was at Bello hospital for a considerable time and the care was 1st class
I beleive that small hospitals provide a more personable/friendly experience than larger hospitals
It shouldnt be only about money/saving costs but that is where Governments come from.

I for one would be prepared to pay more tax if I knew that it would be solely spent on hospitals only--I know I am living in a fairy land again

Good luck with trying to keep the hospital open

JANETTE R

Janette R I did my training at Bellingen in the 60's. I have been back as a patient since. Still is a great hospital. Definitely save the hospital!!!!!!

if it wasnt for clover wade we wouldnt even have the neighbour hood centre as the last remnant of the original school here in Bellingen, some times u just gotta keep fighting! the locals didnt like it when she did that, maybe these locals should have taken more notice of her tactics, as now thus same ppl are facing same problems but bigger! PROGRESS, not everything new is progress!

CAROLINE J

Caroline J The delegate for BHAG who will carry our message to Carmel Tebutt next week gave an eloquent and stirring presentation of case to keep the Bellingen District Hospital and its services. There were about seventy people at the Golf Club and the Senators listened to presentations about the needs of our town. She will accompany the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor to Sydney next Wed 24th to see the Minister and she will carry our heartfelt wishes and a good case for keeping Bellingen Hospital open and functioning.

My first baby was also born at Bello hospital, the first on new years day in 2007. Bello hospital is a beautiful place to have access to. I recently spent 2 weeks there after an op, the staff are just amazing!! But can only imagine the hard time my partner would have experienced having to travel back and forward to Coffs to enable me to see my two young children. This community needs the hospital right where it is!!!!!

SAMMI C

Sammi C A callout to all the Bellingen Mothers-

We need a
group of pregnant mothers, mothers with babies or older children to
come and be a part of a photo shoot to raise awareness of birthing
issues in the shire. Both local artist and photographer

photos with a view to highlight our needs for appropriate local home and hospital birth options. The
photos will also be a part of a presentation made by the Bellingen

CRAIG N

Craig Neill    I was born at Bellingen Hospital, as was my brother. George Henry himself delivered us both. He sewed me up on occasion. As time went by both of my children were also born at Bellingen. The most caring and loving environment you could not ask for. The genuine love and care was amazing, so much so that the Midwife (Val) was so excited that she declared my daughter to the world! Dr Little beat me to the hospital on that wonderful occasion. Where else would one expect such extraordinary one on one care. Bellingen Hospital is much, much more than that. May it be allowed to continue.

HEIDI H

Heidi H
Yeah that was back when there was even a peadiatric unit.

SHARON C

Sharon C    I was treated at the hospital last night for a nasty bite on my bum, it really is a fantastic hospital that must not be allowedto close. I'm from England and I see how everything goes belly up when the cottage hospitals close there, I visit bello every year and as I see the community growing this service becomes more vital for the town and surrounding areas.

ANNIE S

Annie S
Bellingen hospital is vitally important for this community. It is the greatest little hospital on earth, has the best care and wonderful staff and it is an honour to work there. We must save it

REBECCA S V

Rebecca S B I live in Bellingen and have 4 precious little children. WE MUST SAVE THE HOSPITAL!!! the amount of times that i have been to the hospital with the kids is unbelievable, ticks, Stitches, burns, temperatures, concussion, rashes let alone the broken arm and being in labour. I hate to think what could happen to my beautiful children if the hospital was to close. What do we do for the people that live 20k out of town and have a heart attack, or get bitten by a snake or have an accident. WE NEED TO SAVE OUR HOSPITAL!! For us now and our children in the future..

TANIA D

Tania D    get of this stuff about bello hosp how much more do we have to see, im all for savin it but come on a nuth is a nuth.

HEIDI H

Heidi H     Bello hospital is so vital to the town and surrounding communities. I tried to have my baby there but due to needing intervention was taken to coffs. Although I am greatful we have coffs hospital I will forever be greatful for being able to walk around the beautiful gardens at brdh during labour and having the opportunity to get to know the midwives there during anti-natal class.
We were transferred back to bello where my husband was allowed to stay, we had our own room and I was allowed to open a window! All things not allowed at coffs.
I really hope that I will be able to have my next baby there.

CELY O

Cely O'N I've had 4 ops in day surgery in Bello Hospital and the staff there are excellent........I've also had a major op at Coffs and I say the same about them......But we definitely need Bello Hospital to say open........it's such a beautiful place to be when you need care.....

Patsy-ann E is wondering if Bello hospital closes down how are chronic asthmatics and those with heart trouble going to get to Coffs hospital in time....it can take just 10 minutes for a child with chronic asthma to crash...I have experienced an emergency like this once I really do not want to experience it again having a child almost die in your arms is a horrifying time...we NEED Bello hospital how many innocent people will have to die before the powers that be acknowledge this fact

Glad to know that those waits aren't experienced by all! The best we can do is try to work together so everyone benefits - the hard-working staff at both hospitals no less than the patients. There is no criticism of CH staff from me! I cant even imagine how difficult it must be to do such a tricky job under all that extra pressure that we hear about so often.

Amen to that....remember Vince Lovell, he used to accompany Dr Hewitt on his rounds looking at the trees, after the rounds at the hospital were completed, they did this often.
I'm sure my husband and I somehow ended up with a whole lot of slides of those trees etc taken over the years.....they are in a cupboard somewhere, how sad that they were not valued more highly....
However, they are valued for ever more by all those who know and love Bellingen, once seen, loved forever...xxx

Congratulations, I lived in Bellingen then and my daughter was born the next year....
Remember Vince ran the Cinema when it was one, and also the Historical Society...I took a group of seniors there in the mid 90's and Vince was there telling his priceless tales....

I believe that Bellingen Shire's population is 12500 give or take, but as Richard says, there are many more out there who have left, and many of these return on visits or more permanently, and still use and value the hospital. Lets keep it that way!

PIP W

PIP W       Dr George Hewitt was the doctor of the Bellingen Shire, and for much of his 60 years of practice there the only one. Two of his claims to fame are that he delivered the Sara Quadruplets August 17-19, 1950 at Bellingen Hospital, and he is also responsible for many of the grand trees around Bellingen, because he was a keen amateur botanist. Thanks to him, Bellingen Hospital has a wonderful garden featuring trees from many parts of the world. It was my pleasure to stroll around the hospital grounds and take some shots. Dr Hewitt, who started in the days of horseback doctoring, was still practising when I first moved to Bellingen in the mid-1970s. I think he's a real hero.

What a brilliant hospital...a true gem!

SOLVEIHG H

Solveig L i live in bellingen, and cannot stress enough the value of this hospital.. Everyone I speak to has remakable storied to tell of lives being saved, babies being boen, the incredible atmosphere of family, community and caring nursing and medical satff there. One memorable quote made to me was "that it was a hospital where people got better". Sounds simplistic, but it is true.. One receives one on one care at Bello that in my opinion money cannot buy. Because the X factor is implicit here. It is called genuine old fashioned love and care.. a rarity these days to be found anywhere, no matter how much money you have.. There is community support...

I did my first birth there and said goodbye to my mother there. On both occaisions my load was made lighter by an atmosphere of caring involvement - impossible in Coffs hospital. The pollies call closing hospitals progress. I am terrified of big hospitals with good reason.

JAKI L

Jaki L I've been told by Bello and Coffs Harbour folk that the wait at Coffs A&E is often 8 hours, Day Surgery 12 to 18 months, ambulances queued up 5 or 6 deep, mothers-to-be told they cant book into CH Maternity cause beds already allocated. Bello Hospital can help with all of this: reinstate its full services so we can share the load! THEN we can try to ensure people dont have Adam's experiences

JOANNE C

Joanne C
A friend of mine had a baby 10 months ago and had no problems booking in, staff and doctors.....five star service..only this week had to have day surgery and she had to wait 4 hours prior to that had to have gall bladder out and only had to wait 6 weeks, the staff at Coffs do and amazing job... Bellingen River District Hospital would be a big asset to Coffs....we need Bello and Coffs, they need to work together. I am sure this one of many beautiful occasions where everything went smoothly and yes people may be inconvenienced at various stages, but hey that is the public sustem and you have the government to blame.

I don't understand why they would take out Bellingen Hospital. Its harder to get to the Coffs Health Campus then it is to drive up the road to a local surgery. Politics are frustrating

MELISSA S

Melissa S i have grown up and lived in bellingen all my life and the number of times i have visited the hospital for myself , family and friends is a lot. i have had lives saved due to action take at this hospital and for that i am forever grateful...dont let there be a time when this is not the case. the wait at coffs is disgracreful and they dont need to exta pressure. save out hospital at all costs. thank you from my boys and me.

CHRISTINE D

Christine M D Bello Hospital is a vital necessity for the community, Coffs Hospital is unable to keep up with the demand of the area, it is senseless to think that they need to reduce services especially in the maternity section. Where would people go ? If Bello closed Coffs would not be

adam grant your the 1% who arnt happy with the service that bello hospital provides. your leg couldnt have been that bad or you would have been transfered to coffs via ambo much sooner then 3 hours. During the last school holidays, firstly my 8 year old son Finn, cut his finger through his tendon at 8 o'clock in the morning, went to Bello Hospital, they cleaned it up, but we had to go to Coffs Hospital for the operation, a week later, my partner cut his hand with a circular saw at work, went to Bello Hospital, got 20 stitches, a week later my other son Kai, fell out of a tree and had to get 5 stitches in the back of his head, at Bello, I'd just like to say, it's so comforting to know that there is a hospital nearby, when these sort of accidents happen, and you don't have to drive for a long time when your loved ones are in pain. Thank you Bellingen Hospital, I've used you when I had to, and many different times as well as the above-mentioned circumstances. I'd hate to have to drive to Coffs for an Emergency.

You, your doctors and staff rock!!!!

ELIZABETH W

Elizabeth W I was also born in the bellingen hospital 63 years ago. Only for Dr Hewitt and this hospital I would have died at 18months old.I spent a lot of time in this hospital till I was 10 years old. Spent one christmas there.I remember everyone was at the big table in the middle of the ward,I was still sleeping in my bed, when nurse heather fuller came and took me over and sat me on a pillow so I was high enough to see the food on the table. Even though I was very sick, I still do have lots of memories.

CHELONE B

Chelone B The loss of the Bellingen hospital would be a tragedy for the area. It services a much wider community than just the immediate town. I grew up and went to school in Thora. It is a 1/2 hour trip into Bellingen, sometimes longer. For those of us who have had accidents out there the Bello hospital did us proud. To drive to Coffs can be the difference between life and death for some of us.
